Ice Cold Take: My Initial Thoughts on Robertson’s Extension

When I first saw the news that Eric Robinson had been resigned by the Carolina Hurricanes at 4x$1.7M, my reaction was that the number was a little high. I took to X (the everything app. It’s all happening on X) and called the deal “a tad steep” and boy did people let me hear it. The initial reaction was thinking that his last deal was in the $900’s and this is nearly 2x that initial deal…it seemed like a lot at face value.

Why was I wrong?

Looking back at his year, it was the best of his career. Robinson played all 82 regular season games and amassed 32 points. He also played all 15 games in the playoffs with 3 points with some very impactful minutes.

Despite playing on the 4th line, Robinson got valuable minutes and proved that he can be a steady, reliable player for the team. There’s a clear fit for Robinson in Carolina.

At the end of the day, $1.7M is a great value and the jump caught me by surprise.

What the AAV looks like moving forward?

Again, my initial shock was on the AAV. Any 80% AAV increase from year to year seems like a big jump. With the cap going up, everyone is going to have to re-calibrate their perception of where players are in terms of value.

I am planning to take a deeper look at current values over where the cap is going so keep your eyes out for that. Projecting the percentage of his current deal against the future caps, it’s the equivalent to $1.3M of the $88M cap.

Yeah – I was wrong…congrats on calling me on this, you pigeons!
